Microsensors

This Unit specialises in thin film and detection via research and development in innovative solid-state microsensor detection techniques (chemoresistivity with tin oxide and barium titanate for measuring methane, natural gas and carbon monoxide and oxide). Its state-of-the-art research is geared towards electrochemical and immunomagnetic detection for health applications (detection of antibody/antigen hybridization) and laser interference lithography (LIL) for generating layers with nanometric resolution.

Thanks to microtechnology, very precise microsensors can be created, very small in size and taking advantage of the laws of scale (lower inertias, energy consumption, etc.), at a low cost as they are batch-manufactured. Detection and measurement of physical, chemical and biological magnitudes.

Main projects.
Glucose. The glucose level is measured by means of an electrochemical sensor with integrated microelectrodes, by means of oxidation of the glucose by the glucose oxidase enzyme.
Water flow. The water flow inside a tube is measured by means of a MEMS technology-based pressure sensor.
Gas detection. Microsensor for detecting gases: Toxic gases, airflow and gas family.
Oil degradation. Microsystem for evaluating the degradation of oils, including a SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) device for measuring viscosity...
Detection of biological species. Biosensor system able to detect small variations in low magnetic fields, based on giant magnetoresistances (GMR) of thin film...
Monitoring for organ transport and transplant. A sensorized needle for impedance spectrum and temperature measurement for application in the transport and transplant of organs.
